Product Description

A rotary retort machine(rotary autoclave) is a specialized pressurized sterilization container used in the food and beverage industry. Its core function is to agitate or invert the sealed container during the heat treatment cycle. Unlike static autoclaves, where the container remains completely still during sterilization, rotary autoclaves are specially designed to mechanically agitate the materials inside the packaging, significantly improving the efficiency and quality of the heating and cooling processes.

Working Principle

Rotary autoclaves typically employ a horizontal container structure with a large, cage-like rotating drum or support inside to support baskets filled with containers (such as cans, glass bottles, or flexible packaging bags). Driven by an external motor, this internal drum rotates slowly and continuously along the long axis of the autoclave, causing the containers to invert 360 degrees.

The core principle of this design lies in the forced convection. As the container inverts, gravity forces “headspace bubbles” (small wisps of air or gas trapped at the top of the sealed packaging) to circulate within the product. This moving bubble acts like a built-in agitator, powerfully stirring the food to eliminate thermal gradients (i.e., temperature unevenness) and allow heat to penetrate to the product’s geometric center more quickly.

The Rotary Retort features flexible counter-pressure control. Once food packaging enters the vessel, the internal pressure rises continuously in tandem with the increasing temperature; consequently, the external pressure must be regulated via a specific pressure curve designed to closely track these internal pressure fluctuations. Compared to steam-based sterilization—where the heat transfer medium is hot water—this method allows for the independent control of temperature and pressure. Within the vessel, temperature and pressure are decoupled and no longer adhere to the fixed correlation characteristic of saturated steam. Based on this premise, the pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the packaging can be effectively balanced by either pressurizing or depressurizing the vessel.
Therefore, the Rotary Retort is ideally suited for packaging types with limited tolerance for pressure differentials—such as PP bottles, bowls, and cans—or for products containing entrapped air.

Rotary Retort Ideal Applications

Rotary autoclaves are particularly recommended for processing high-viscosity, semi-solid, or particulate-rich foods. For products such as broths, sauces, stews, porridges, condensed milk, concentrated bird’s nest, and pet food, static autoclaves typically rely on slow, natural conduction for heat penetration. Mechanical rotation effectively prevents these high-density materials from forming “cold spots” (areas below sterilization temperature) during sterilization and avoids clumping, stratification, or sedimentation.

The Rotary Retort fully complies with GMP standards and FDA requirements. Provided that process parameters are established based on the accurate identification of the coldest point and appropriate temperature settings—and assuming all products share an equivalent pre-sterilization state—the equipment guarantees a contamination rate of less than one in a million. Consequently, it is also widely utilized for canned and bottled beverages and food products, such as Suntory canned coffee, bottled coconut milk (in PE bottles), and canned tomato products. MATTON has supplied three DN1600×4800 model Rotary Retorts specifically for the sterilization of canned beverages.

Key Advantages

Significantly Faster Processing Speed: Through forced convection, rotary autoclaves accelerate heat transfer, reducing the overall sterilization cycle by 50% to 90% compared to static autoclaves.

Uniform Heat Distribution: Continuous tumbling motion ensures that the heating medium penetrates evenly into the product, preventing food near the container walls from scorching or overcooking while waiting for the product’s geometric center to reach the target temperature.

Superior Product Quality: Due to the significantly reduced exposure time to high temperatures, the product better retains its original texture, color, flavor, and nutritional value (such as vitamins and amino acids).

Increased Throughput: The significantly reduced processing time allows manufacturing plants to process more batches in the same amount of time, thereby improving operational efficiency and reducing unit production costs.

High Degree of Automation: The entire processing can be controlled via a touchscreen. Functions such as displaying sterilization process requirements (temperature, time, sterilization pressure, cooling pressure, cooling temperature, and even the sterilization intensity F-value) can be customized for different models. Temperature control accuracy reaches ±0.2℃, and pressure control accuracy is ±0.01Mpa. Hundreds of sterilization process procedures can be stored, greatly reducing operator fatigue and improving production efficiency.

If you are looking for a suitable sterilization retort for beverages and food products—such as jams, puddings, fruit-flavored milk, dairy drinks (e.g., flavored coffee, walnut milk, peanut milk), and other products containing particulates—a rotary sterilization retort is undoubtedly the right choice.

Why Choose the MATTON Rotary Retort? — What Unique Advantages Does MATTON Offer?

MATTON holds not only CE and ISO certifications but also ASME certification. The machinery we manufacture utilizes components of the highest quality—such as flanges and dished heads—with the latter being formed via a single cold-pressing process and subsequently subjected to vibration aging treatment to ensure they remain free from stress-induced deformation during operation.
The stainless steel surfaces of our retort machines undergo a sandblasting treatment to enhance both surface hardness and corrosion resistance, offering particular protection against the corrosive effects of chlorine added to cooling water. Furthermore, we employ an advanced and highly stable Siemens control system, ensuring that customers worldwide can readily access the necessary supply chain support, thereby minimizing downtime caused by technical faults.
MATTON stands out in the retort machine market as one of the few manufacturers combining cutting-edge equipment with rigorous production process controls, thereby guaranteeing the first-class quality of every finished machine. In numerous product reviews and evaluations conducted by industry associations, MATTON has consistently maintained a ranking within the TOP 3.

Within the sterilization retort, the MATTON rotating assembly utilizes a five-point support system comprising a rear shaft and support rollers. Compared to the four-point support systems typically employed by industry peers, this configuration ensures superior concentricity of the rotating assembly. Furthermore, the adoption of a flat rear end cap reduces the bending moment load on the rear shaft, thereby extending its service life. Consequently, MATTON equipment offers enhanced safety and reliability.
