What is a CO2 Vacuum Freeze-Drying Machine?
The R744 (carbon dioxide) refrigerant is used in environmentally friendly, high-performance and large-scale commercial freeze-drying machines, such as the MTFD-R744 series equipment from MATTON Company. Compared with traditional refrigerants, this refrigerant derived from nature helps curb environmental deterioration and significantly improves the refrigeration efficiency.
MATTON MACHINERY: Next-Generation CO2(R-744) Industrial Freeze Dryer
MATTON MACHINERY, a leading freeze dryer manufacturer in China, is pleased to introduce our new generation of best-selling products: the MTFD-R744 freeze dryer with a carbon dioxide refrigeration system. This model retains MATTON’s long-standing freeze dryer chamber design and is equipped with the latest carbon dioxide refrigeration system. The compressor for the refrigeration system can be either BITZER or Maekawa . The heating system remains MATTON’s classic Alfa Lafa plate heat exchanger.

CO2 is a highly dense gas with an exceptional volumetric cooling capacity—approximately 4 to 12 times greater than that of ammonia at low evaporating temperatures (-55°C to 0°C). This allows our freeze dryers to utilize significantly smaller compressors and pipe diameters. The factory-built compressor racks are highly compact and can even be sited outdoors or on a roof, freeing up valuable manufacturing floor space and reducing facility construction costs.
Global-oriented future freeze-drying solutions
The MATTON R744 freeze-drying machine is widely used in the industries of drying health supplements, fruits, vegetables, coffee, milk, and meat. The products dried by this freeze-drying machine have excellent taste, attractive color, and good shape.
The outstanding feature of the MTFD-R744 series is that it can be designed based on a sustainable, compliant, and efficient environmental protection solution to meet the strict regulatory and operational requirements of developed markets, providing uncompromising deep-freezing performance and ensuring the highest sublimation efficiency.

Proven Success: Practical Cases in Developed Markets
As the United States enforces the AIM Act and Europe tightens the F-Gas Regulation to phase out high-global warming potential (GWP) synthetic refrigerants, industrial processors require a sustainable, compliant, and highly efficient solution.
Our CO2 freeze-drying architecture has been proven to deliver exceptional ROI, safety, and performance across diverse industrial applications:
Case 1: Large-Scale Matton Freeze drying machine & Processing (Pacific Northwest, USA)
The Challenge: A major processing facility needed to expand operations but wanted to avoid exceeding the 500 lb threshold for ammonia to bypass strict OSHA/EPA regulatory burdens.

Case 2: High-Volume Sustainable Food Production (European Market)
The Challenge: A food manufacturer focusing on premium, sustainable freeze-dried fruits and meals required a system with the lowest possible environmental impact to align with strict EU F-Gas directives.
The Solution: A dedicated CO2 freeze dryer utilizing grade 304 stainless steel chambers and anodized aluminum product trays for optimal heat transfer.
The Result: The system achieved deep freezing temperatures (down to -50°C) with unparalleled efficiency. The system captured compressor discharge heat to power the facility’s hot water needs, drastically lowering overall energy consumption and shrinking the plant’s carbon footprint.
